Copal
An Offering to the Gods

The original name for Copal is derived from the Aztec word "copalli", meaning incense. Copal is made from the resin extracted from the Bursera Bipinnata tree, and in the past, it was used by ancient Mexican Shamans to induce spiritual trances and establish communication with the divine world.
It is said that the scent-filled smoke which emanates from this resin, was used as a remedy to alleviate headaches and illnesses caused by cold or damp environments.

The Offering of Copal

The Aztecs buried Copal as a symbolic gift to Tláloc, the god of rain and fertility, while the burning of this resin was essential to the rituals of worshiping their deities. It was through the use of Copal that the ancient people of Mexico ensured a connection between themselves and their gods, strengthening the link of communication and purification.

Allow us to indulge you with a variety of unique therapeutic and relaxing treatments offered at Spa Maya. We invite you to participate in an array of ancient rituals such as our Temascal, the Mayan Good Wish Ceremony, and the Mayan Fertility Ceremony, or to enjoy a variety of therapies based in ancient Mayan and Asian traditions that integrate the riches of the sea with the wealth of local healing herbs. These treatments can take place in our exquisite individual and couples´ suites, or if you wish, you can have a massage by the sea or in our beautiful jungle cabana. As well, you can receive your treatment in the privacy and comfort of your own villa. (An additional 20% service charge will be applied).

Spa Maya also offers you a variety of amenities such as a steam room, Jacuzzi, and Swiss and pressure showers at no extra cost.

The Spa is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. We suggest that you make reservations for all treatments 24 hrs. in advance. You can reserve by dialing ext. 5027 or 5028.

When taking a treatment, it is recommended that you not wear jewelry or bring any valuable items to the Spa.

All our prices are quoted in Mexican pesos. A 10% tax and 15% gratuity fee will be added to your bill. Cancellations must be made at least 4 hours prior to your appointment, otherwise, there will be a 50% service charge added to your bill.
If it is raining, your “Seeds of Abundance” can be used for treatments 50 minutes or longer, with the exception of the Mayan Good Wish Ceremony, the Temascal, and beauty treatments.

Oceanfront Yoga classes take place everyday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at a cost of 435.6 pesos per person. We also offer personalized Pilates, Circuit Training, and Strength Training classes at a cost of 950.4 pesos per person, by appointment only.

TEMASCAL

The word Temascal originates from the Aztec, “calli”, meaning house, and “temas”, meaning vapor or steam. The structure, made from mortar and stone is symbolic of Mother Nature´s womb. Through the use of steam and healing herbs, the temascal ceremony aids in the purification of both the body and the spirit. The stones, from which the Temascal is built, represent generations of grandmothers who embody the knowledge of the earth. They invite us to reflect on the past, as experiencing the Temascal ritual is an opportunity to free ourselves from that which we no longer need in our lives and allows us to live wholly in the present.

The natural elements brought together in the temascal are:
* Water- symbolizing blood, fluids, and emotions
* Earth- the body and physical matter represented by the Temascal itself
* Aromatic steam as our life´s energy and breath
* Fire- the embodiment of the spirit through hot volcanic stone

We invite you to participate in this therapeutic, relaxing and mystical journey.

We recommend that you:
* wear a sarong or bathing suit free of zippers, metal clasps or buttons
* not wear jewelry to the ceremony
* eat only a light meal before the ceremony, and avoid all food two hours before the ceremony
* Do not participate in the Temascal ceremony if you suffer from any of the following: heart conditions, high or low blood pressure, epilepsy, if you are pregnant, or if you have an open wound or intense sunburn

MAYAN KAMNIKTE CEREMONY

This heartfelt ritual is a unique Mayan ceremony performed by our Shaman, who following the rites of tradition begins the ceremony with a purification ritual, addressing himself to the four cardinal points of the Universe and asking permission to bless the union of the couple with love, peace, and abundance.
Following sacred customs, the bride is dressed in a traditional handmade Mayan wedding dress and the groom wears a fine white linen Guayabera, symbols of new beginnings and the renewal of love and commitment shared by two people. As the ceremony comes to an end, the couple make of gift of fresh flower petals to the sea, asking that their dreams and hopes for their union will be fulfilled.
The ceremony is performed in the Mayan dialect and guidance is given in English.
