The Temazcal
The Temazcal is a pre Hispanic tradition. The word “Temazcalli”, means humidity, to get wet or the place where water is born. The Temazcal is defined as the place where medicine is born and one connects with the spirit of water, plants, air, earth and fire.
Calli means house. Teocalli is where education and knowledge are taught.
The Temazcal is similar to a steam, it is an igloo like construction built with clay bricks, piloncillo (raw cane sugar) and medicinal herbs. The ritual lasts aproximatly for 2 hours and consists of 2 sessions, app. 20 minutes each.
It Begins with a brief explanation and each person applies a healing clay made up of cucumber, papaya and various herbs to their body which is washed off in the ocean. A seashell is blown to salute the 5 directions (North, South, East, West and Earth).We Continue with a “Shamanic cleansing” and an herbal tea.
Once inside the Temazcal, herbal water is poured on to hot stones producing a cleansing steam. Through spiritual and pre Hispanic songs , meditation and conversation we complete the purification of body, mind and soul.
